Hypocrite.
Damned be I.
I've fallen into my own hole of personal hell no's.
This new years brought a few resolutions: Harmonica mastering and setting 1 week of the month to create for myself and not others.
I'll blame it on the moving (yes, again... we packed up and moved), the working, the jivin' and the shakin'.
And while I can moan about the disaster of moving in winter... We found our dream... so I'll just shut my mouth and be grateful.
An old water tower turned refurbished home on 33 acres of Vineyards, Roses, and Oak Trees.
Heaven comes when you've found peace with what you have. When you aren't anxiously struggling with life's have's and have not's.
*Plop... life delivers what you never knew you really wanted.
When I keep myself true and balanced, unexplainable goodness drops into my mouth for a hefty chew.
This is why.... my dear friends, I make a vow to take that week to me and myself. That's how my balance remains. I know better.
So, whilst perusing for water tower interior decor ideas, I came across some favorites I had to share.
One of these days I'l get some style pics up here, one of these days.

My extreme absence from things that I love, for instance writing here, with you, has given me a little walk down memory lane... insert these photos.
Taken on a Sunday, surely.
Nothing to do but breathe ocean salt into my very tiny nostrils. A day where That's a day in and of itself.
To Do: Breath.
Check. Overwhelming feeling of accomplishment.
Known now as what I wish I was doing.
I'm not. Alas, I am not.
Instead, I've taken up my hobby of loading my plate as high and wide as possible... taking gulps and swallowing chunks as I shimmy down my little path of success.
Come January, I'm off and out. Yoga retreat? Mountain Hiking? Bali again? Orrrrr...
How bout just sitting the f*ck down with some paints and a bottle of my choice, perfectly pretty underwear, braided hair, and old Motown trickling through my ear drums. Just thinking/typing about it makes my soul calm.
Come winter, I flee like a bird and head South. Somewhere warm.
Got those anxious travelin' jitter bugs again... They come every year this time, tis the season.
Some people sit on Santa's Lap... I get the hell out of the U.S. Of A.

I've been runnin' with the rats. A Rats race you ask?
Eh, not so much... more of a happy scurry.
Feverishly jumping mid stride in pure happiness, from this trash can to that golden sewer over there. Oh the JOY!
This past week has been (searching for perfect word....)........ Delightful. Yes.
I wish I could share with you the on-goings of my recent journeys. Maybe I'll come up with some sort of strange poem that gives way to the dots for your little red pen to connect.
For now.... I am resting from my travels to the East Coast. Nestled back in my cottage nook in these whispering woods. Oh how I love this fall encroaching on winter air. Makes me peaceful and energized all in one sweep. That's talent right there, tip of the hat to you October.

This post - when I photographed Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros for this interview in Glide Magazine- captured the moments of my holy shit I'm falling deep for this crew of madly talented, sincerely humble, grossly charismatic band. This was before "home" had visited just about every living soul's pandora station, ipod, music festival and whistling tunes and tonations. My heart felt a bit betrayed after my lil' set of eyes and ears experienced their jammin Janglin'on a Ford car commercial. I got over it. Instead, I choose to applaud them all. Alexander and crew have found a positive niche, one that resonates to the point of tangible delight. I'm a lyrical kinda soul; put "mmmm hmmm" (head shake of acknowledgment) words along with a solid beat and I'll be a forever fan.

Oh Heeeeeyy There Friend.

I'd love to start this jumble o' jargon by apologizing for my extreme delinquency as of late...

but I'm not - not sorry one bit- choosin' to stay sincere.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my detachment from the la la land of inter web addiction.

I've been booked in the city the last 5 weeks straight...

Eerily early mornings- leaving my love and my little piece of land while it's still dark. Moon is still out, wonder why I don't do this more... it's somethin' else waking when the stars and crescent still fill the sky... little o' sunshine hasn't even winced an open eye.

Doing this for the 14th morning in a row... a bit of a mind f*ck.

This weekend has been the first in quite a few- waking up at (gasp) 8am, lazy breakfast and garden wandering, Freestone visit to the glorious and equally glutinous Wildflour bakery.

My love and I jumped in the mobile,

pushed play to Jackson Browne, and set off to get some ocean air 15 miles West.

Instantly grounded.

The last few weeks have been harder than the norm. While I feel an optimistic nature is usually sky high for me, I felt down and beaten. Cliche of when it rains... you know.

Transitions my dear friends, transitions.

Getting my system in order again; my essential balance is in check after a few days of hibernating nature side with my man.

Happy middle of the week to you all.

Does Middle feel better than Beginning or the crowd pleaser, End?

Monday brings a dreaded fresh start... Wednesday gives way to crappy shit happenings from the two days before and Friday- Friday allows all those pathways of escape to open up, in hopes of forgetting the week all together.

Pick your poison I suppose.

I choose Friday. She's always been a pal.

Steadfast but still knows me well enough to fill my daily do's with surprises and gasping moments.

Beer cracked, book open, shades on (and actually doing their job, for I am basking in sun, somewhere out there...), and tunes thumping lightly (not a heavy bass kinda gal).

Today I spend my hours doing very unpleasant things, things that time should never be spent on. I woke up and started towards the fridge (usually I head straight for bertha the kettle, eyes still closed, cooooffffeee)... my love watching me in amusement...

"Whaaaat? Too early for a drink?"...

"Ames, it's 7am".

"Riiiight."

Already trying to find my ideal escape from this dreaded Wednesday.

Vodka is of no help this particular morning.

Dentist. Drilling. Bill paying over frozen up i-phone during drill bit changes and spit suckage intermission. Ouuuy.

One of these days, it won't be long... eh Neil?

I'm no pessimist. All is not lost. Good news came a few days back, as one of my recent shoots made the cover of We Like We Love Magazine.

Ahhh madness I tell ya.
My weeks have all collided together... deciding (behind my back ) they would conjure up a real master piece of a mess. Well shit, touche'. Got me. Here I am.
Up at 4am, home at 9pm... sleeping on couches. Busing, Ferry-ing, Car breaking down yet again.
I had it. No more.
Got a new baby parked in my little narrow driveway. That's correct... got rid of the beast. Had her since I was 16, it was time. Love hate and everything in between. We've experienced it all. Like your first love that never gets out of your life;
"Damn him!"
"I love him!"
"Get out!"
"Please stay!?"
"Who am I without you?!"

Ahh, after the last breakdown (while on job with precious cargo) in the middle of downtown SF, I have decided to give her up to the greater good of car gods. Let her go once and for all... ooooh good times, good times.

My near and dear friend Josh sent me this little slice of goodness.
Most of you may tire of the video after a bit... but I was wrapped in a consistent stare from start to finish.
It very much reminds me of my childhood- riding my pony Tigress to kindergarden... tying her up with water and food... and strutting in just in time for "circle song" and the A B's and C's of life.

Over the Hills and Far Away.

I love you.
Yep.
I'm just lovin' love right now. I actually skipped to work the other day... mind you... I wake up at 4:30 am for work and I never skip... but there I was, hoppin to my car like a little hungry spring rabbit.
Feeling like the world has decided to bless me with a week of sweet happenings. Thank you World and the beautiful people who make me, ME... and you YOU. I feel unnecessarily cheesy right now... (romance novel and a pint... add some smiling tears and "ahhh haaa" sighs and I could be the definition of a bona fide idyllic romantic. Scary.)
Refinery 29 SF featured me in the 1 girl, 4 looks.... WOW. Humbled and grateful for Katie and Angela, two of the coolest laid back ladies out there. It was an easy hour of chatting and changing fits... babbling life's decisions and knowing who you are along the way.
A few days later, beautiful Julia of Free People asked for some thoughts and photos to put up on the FP Blog. You all know that I'm not one to swoon over anything corporate or company like... but Free People is the rare exception. Different. Genuine. The people that work there and represent that brand are the real deal. Brilliant really.

Whenever the Sunshine Comes Through...

My dear old friend sent me this Album. Brotherhood of the Sun.
I was completely taken.
Taken by the sheer magnitude of happiness and honesty. You really can see it... honesty and happiness that is. You feel it in your bones. Mmmmm. Goodness.
Every photo made me smile high with personal thoughts of who I was looking at. Then I found myself just staring...dreaming...smiling.
It's the little things... always the little things.
Today, they came by way of Mehosh Michael Dziadzio's exquisite photos.
My mother lived on a commune in her 20's as an artist and singer. I grew up in her arms listening to tales and stories and meeting her crazy hippie friends that would roll through our lives from time to time. "so and so is staying for the summer".... "so and so has decided to move in with her kids for a bit."
I grew up with 3 older brothers and HEAPS of Aunties and Uncles.

Mehosh says....

"Back in the seventies I lived on a commune for seven years. My job was to document the various aspects of our lifestyle and share it with those who may have been seeking the same, by taking a slideshow on the road to college campus's and New Age expositions. At it's peak , the community reached a population of around 350 men, women and children. This album is dedicated to premise that it is possible to live together in peace, once we realize that we are all brothers and sisters under one God, whatever we conceive him or her to be. Now, more than ever does this concept seem more relevant and necessary, if we are going to continue to thrive on this planet Earth."

Let it Fall.

My mother bought me this guitar on my 18th birthday.
Ma' has always placed anything(and everything) in my hands that could bridge the gap between imagination and vision to the actual act of creative outlet.
"here, take these brushes", "there, play the piano", "sing!", "learn your anatomy-life drawing class" (I was far too young to be drawing naked strangers)... ahh, so blessed to have her as mine.
Don't mind the matter of my age now... but I will say I have had this beaut for some-time.
Handmade with inlays of Northern California abalone shell. Honestly... I'm just happy to look at it.
While I would love to boast about my mad skills, they don't go far past basic cords and some strum-a-lum when I have the moments. This (along with sharpening my harmonica skills) is one of many summer goals.
My new place is too small for a separate art studio... so I've set up my easels and tables amongst the oaks and fushia's on our property. A perfect place to pour a glass of your poison (be it as you please) and sketch, paint, sew, sing, strum... this has become my happy place.
Work hasn't seemed to slow... jobs are stacking; shoots, video short films, beauty editorials and shoe/bag campaigns all planned in the month of August. I need a breather. Today was a breath... a big fresh inhale. Tomorrow I shall exhale.
My friends came to visit my country cottage from the city; we frolicked around the pond and packed baskets full of all things fresh from our vomiting garden.
I love the people in my life... truly, thankful everyday.

I may just follow these fella's lead and try a cabbage/dishbrush combo.

Lay Lady Lay.

~~A few days ago~~ Last Week I styled an editorial for WeLikeWeLove.

Whaaaaat.

Am I the only one Time gets time and time again?

Dang... it must be workin' out. Time's been running faster and harder than ever before and leaving me in a slight... stupor.

I am finally understanding why my lovely senior citizen friends (if you don't have some, get some... quick) grumble about "enjoying it while it lasts, it will be gone before you know it."

I miss childhood, where a day seemed like a week and a full year was incomprehensible.

Back to the point.

These Polaroids were taken by dear (and very talented) friend and photographer Ashley Gordon.

She came and assisted with lighting and prep for styling, all the while documenting behind the scenes.

We shot through the night, chasing what light we could until 9:30.

8 looks in 3 hours.

Never done that before... don't really want to again.

A success nonetheless.

We were already in Napa Valley for the shoot...

you know we went straight for some pinot after.

I've been joining my hats and scarves together in holy matrimony as of late.

My love has left for the week for river adventures with the guys.

I'm diving into proposals for shoots, casting models, and creating stories for upcoming editorials with creative friends. Got my stack o'inspirations to peruse while I get me some tan on.

Tangled Up In Bliss.

June kept me busy wandering and smiling.

Movin' and a shakin'.

No worries or hurries.

For the first time in quite a while, I feel settled and happy for those 10 hour work days.

Thanks June, i've got the sickness.
Nasty in the head, throat, ears and eyes.
Straight rain for 2 days at the end of my favorite summer month? Christ.
So... while I'm on the mend, I take to our newly implanted garden. Spending the day romping through our front fields, digging in the dirt so I can spread the wild seeds. Flowers that I don't intend tending to. Let them be... thats what wild implies does it not?
Gardening in floral dress: much better than any pair of shorts out there. Easy, breezy and oh so pretty.
Today reminds me of my cousin.
When his mother asked him that dreaded question...

Music festivals now in heavy rotation.

Feeling like an overfed gerbil running it's heart out on a wheel built for another...

spent- exhausted- weary- weak- defeated- pathetic.

Shape up... the season has just begun.

Forget Yoga.

Crunches with beer in hand and feet extended straight out tappin' in perfect rhythm... all at the same time. Go on, try it.

Just returned from my favorite weekend of the year- SNWMF.

Spent with dearest loved ones every year, it also happens to be the festival that always falls on my birthday. 26 years old. No ring to that number. Nothin grand about 26.
Time just struts on by.... prideful mindless prick.

Last week I had the honor of judging the Beauty Expo at Pigment Cosmetics. Owen alway's amazes me; his passion for creating exciting platforms for industry professionals yearning to expand and create here in San Francisco (he also puts on San Francisco Fashion Week).
Fellow peer judges Mario (runway stylist and events producer) Greg (owner of Barber Lounge) and Brad (Solz Shoes) and I had a fun filled night of watching MUA's invent and deliver.

Come on in.

A sneaky little peak into my new digs.

I'm still pondering whether this yellow tint from the iphone brings feelings of life and energy or putrid stagnance. Either way... here it is. I assure you the new home is full of all things good.

Clawfoot tub. Steel iron spiral stairs lead way to our lofted bed-nook- zen den.

A frame... Amen.

Nothing like the late nights spent with a wood burning fireplace, sporadic and melodic.

Been spending my days in the garden. Digging dirt to my elbows, savoring worms like gold, and drinking summer beer. Ahhh. Vintage stores beware: Hardware stores have become my new haven.

Nothing like metal, dirt, mouthwash, brooms, bat shit and hoses all under one roof.

Antiquing in our new town is unreal... shop after shop resembles unexpected cold water on your neck. Shocked and pleased beyond belief that you, yes you, could feel so energized and fresh.

Freshly used is the magical duo.

Saw Lykke Li at the Regency Ballroom last night.

Amazing as ever.

Rockin a new haircut paired with an incredible body suit.

Danced all night.

Crawled home to our sanctuary.

Slept in for the first time in ages.

The time finally came. I packed up and moved on.
Boxes were taught with treasures collected over the years, photos with significant importance, rocks that were a special shape (though no one would know it) and simply couldn't be tossed. I realized after packing up the U-haul, everything I own can be carefully packed into 14 feet of space and a old run down rodeo... I was also slightly disgusted with my sentimental bullshit.
"toss it!" -they would shout.
"but that was the receipt from the ticket I bought 3 years ago to that one show... remember?".
yuk.
Now that I am in a new space, I find myself haphazardly chucking items out the door, finding way to their own demise. "Moving In" sale is much more fun.
While I leave this Redwood sanctuary pensively... I do simultaneously move forward with the profound love of new chapters and clean slates. I've found my perfect country cottage only an hour away from my San Francisco city life. Gypsy at heart, I love change. I sit here in my new little window nook, looking at the chickens roost around the gardens, frogs sing on the foggy pond waters, wood burning stove- while small- ferociously crackles away at it's fresh meal.
Projects fill the calendar, festivals consume my mind, and the hunt for the perfect bus still remains the lead of my priorities.

Just got finished with an incredible collaboration with favorite creative minds Rus Anson and Joshua Conover. Really looking forward to sharing the final product. 10 page editorial spread for a very exciting magazine. Film crew came along for a documentary and short fashion film. Energy comes from working with amazing people on projects you feel true passion for. Screw coffee... send me Rus and Josh!

Today, I leave you with mostly black and white's, all of these move me today, hopefully in directions of unpacking square cardboard boxes.

I'm back in the good ol' red white and blue of America.
Does it feel good?

Neither nor. It feels simply sterile. Clean and pleasing.

Empty buildings remain open with electricity in full force, far after all have shut the last eye.

Vacuums suck up our seemingly harmful debris.

Herbs and super foods flourish with abundant promise to rid the newest disease scare.

Soils are abundantly rich, water superfluous (at least we pretend), and life can be fed from our 12x12 front deck. These are the little big things that shock an American that has just spent 9 weeks in Africa.

How do you sum up a relatively short trip into a continent where the origin of the first human was discovered. Where slavery flourished and became a commodity trade. Where genital mutilation is still practiced regularly. Where warfare still is expected to erupt unexpectedly. Where people radiate with such astounding beauty and light.... no matter what their personal life has served on their plate. Sights of deep perseverance and hope give 24 hour goosebumps. Strangers become family in an instant.
Human connection is the deepest most simple ingredient. Screw language barriers, politics, have's and have not's... connecting with an elder of 110 years old, holding hands and smiling souls: that's it.
"American soldiers killed my family... why?".... "for oil". Hugs and tears.

I miss my newfound family tremendously. While I take back lessons that will continue to teach even in my absence, I pursue my passions in my own country with a profound calmed peace. I feel blessed. Blessed to come home to support, to opportunity, to rich organic vegetables, loving friends and open doors.

I've never done two posts in one day but after looking back on my previous post I realized I did not speak a single word of the bigger picture. The important news of today, of this week. If this blog is an archive of mine and Amy's lives over the past couple of years, if we want to look back on where we've been, what we've done, who we've become, then I think it only fair to remember, acknowledge and pay full attention to the crisis in Japan.

My heart, blessings, prayers go out to the people of Japan who have lost their homes, loved ones, businesses, everything; and to the thousands more who will continue to suffer due to this disaster. Our lives and the people in them are not to be taken for granted. I am grateful everyday for all that I have.

Amy and I were contacted back in December to style a shoot with photographer Micaela Hoo of The Drifter and The Gypsy, to go alongside Papercut Magazine's March 2011 vintage issue. Quite the fun shoot. Tromping through cow pastures, quick wardrobe changes in early morning fog, and getting lost in the serene backlands East of San Francisco, all while working with an incredibly professional and talented team. Since returning from Panama life has consisted mostly of work, while stalking the newspaper for estate sales, yardsales and anyplace where I might find vintage treasures, and plenty of rainy day lounging with the boy have become my new favorite past times. C'mon April up your speed, festivals, Hawaian mini-vacations, and new creative ventures await.

I've received a handful of emails from Amy since she's been off on her African adventure, and I'll let her describe her time (if that's even possible) spent in Ghana and Tanzania when she returns. But until then an insert from one of her emails sent a few weeks back....

"We left West Africa to awake in the East... completely different in every way possible. People, smells, Greenery, Energy, Arts.... to the left of me sits a women in very traditional Islamic garb... only her eyes I can (barely) see.... to my right sits a traditional Massaii.... Huge plates in the ears, lips stretched out with smaller plates, and more beads than Maya's favorite bead store. The beauty! There is still a large population of Christians living among the Islamic and Tribal... dressed in colorful batik; always matching, always ready to praise God (and then ask for money...). West Africa was incredible, I am still settling with what lessons and knowledge it gave... we met family there, homes away from home... caring people that you have known for lifetimes and experiences that will forever be embedded in my heart."

Panama on my mind

It's been a week...really? Only a week since I've been home from my month long journey through Panama and already it seems like a distant memory. A fond one, but distant nonetheless. A month spent island hopping in the Carribean on bicycle, scooter, foot and the occasional surf board, touring coffee plantations in the highlands, soaking in natural hot springs, testing out my so-so Spanish, consuming incredible food and drink and perusing local craft markets, trying to restrain from buying everything in sight. All I have now is a library full of photos, several bags of organic Panamanian coffee, a few hand made crafts, and my little memory; all things will have to keep me going until....it's like that last drop of water, have to savor it.

Here's a little photo diary of my past month spent in Panama. Outfit shots are seemingly non-existent....a few pairs of trusty sandals, bathing suit and a couple dresses to throw over were all that was needed. I packed poorly and at times wished for more variety in my tiny backpack but in the end, simplicity is key....although it is nice to come home to a closet full of options and loads of Fashion Week photos to catch up on.

It's 2am.

I've had late night coffee... late night beer... late night water too.

I sit now and listen to my lovely love write a song and strum the guitar. He'll pause. Think. Whisper. Pounce on the perfect word. Tones are up, down, side to side. His voice never teetering from the perfection of depth and expression.

I tap my toes under the sheets.

We leave in the morning for our departure to Africa.

It's been a long month of needles, medications and trippy Malaria medicine that unfortunately will be joining us for the entirety of our trip. I just packed (very meticulously) ONE backpack for 8 weeks in 3 different countries. What takes the majority of space? Herbs, tonics, oils, and emergency natural remedies for anything and everything (that's what I'm telling myself.)

I brought 8 headscarves.

Tomorrow I embark on a dream I have had since the tender age of 10.

These beautiful earrings are made by an equally beautiful friend Grace... she'll have a sweet shop up for purchases and custom orders soon. I promise, these are no ordinary feather earrings... I plan to live in these for all of Africa and the entirety of this Summer's festival circuit.

I'll shout out her site when its up and ready.

Ta Ta for now my lovelies. Alex will be headed home this week (missing each other by a few short days) and will certainly keep you posted on all things wonderful, including her recent epic trip to Panama.

Road trips are my favorite kind of trip.

Good music. Full tank of gas ($60 later) in the road-dog-mobile. Cappuccino. Favorite shades. A fitting hat. No particular route. Time to stop as I see fit... and... the last ingredient...ahhem... iphone. Must say, it's a worthy little bugger in times of snapshot glee. Damn the man, damned be the man.

Really though... from country studio to San Francisco haven, the road I call mine is nothing short of exquisite.

My yesterday in a nutshell...

Currently re-reading (for the 3rd time) Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins. I now pick it up, flip to a page, read for ten minutes... walk away more satisfied than before. Love him dearly, next to Hunter S. Thompson... each of them deliver that uncanny ability of making me think, smirk, and internally applaud with unabashed appreciation... "that's it".

Monday at it's finest.
Days like these need happy thoughts. Mine come by way of my favorite kicks and satchel. I got these boots at a favorite SF vintage shop... GOLD I tell ya. Whenever you find that piece, you know.... the one... all else dissipates as you float out the exit of that stinky warehouse shop. I've just witnessed a true miracle. How these boots and this bag survived until I could find them... bless their determined hearts. Meet two of my soulmates: Men's 70's boots (perfectly fit for ladies) and a leather+suede+native printed book bag.

My love and I are off this morning to get the rest of our vaccines for Africa. Yellow Fever and Meningitis served in small doses via needle? A perfect ingredient for a Monday.... shit. Wish us luck.

I woke up. Everything was still... ready for me to fill the space with anything I wish.
Silence. You can see it in the air... a distinct look, unlike either of it's peers, Peace or Quiet.
I'm relishing in being all alone today with Silence. First moment in quite a while; no obligations, nothing pressing, no one to tend to.
Car is dead, and I'm stuck at home alone. Alex is gone to Panama, and I have less than 3 weeks before leaving for Africa. I'm taking this time to myself.
Just be. Read. Write. Relax the senses.
It took a good week of recovery after NYE mayhem... no words, just intense. This year has already brought incredibly clear revelations both of myself and others. Conclusion? Everything feels so damn right. Exhaling with ease is rich.
No feeling like sitting in bed while the sun rises.
Spent my early morning in bed reading and watching our family of deer demolish my gardening efforts. Can't be mad though... can't be angered. Always happy to feed the family.

Ok... Van Morrison has already broken the partnership of Silence and I...

Welcomed with open arms from both of us.

apple beet ginger

I've traded my local coffee shop for a juicer....not quite willingly by the way. My body has forced me to take a step back, re-evaluate it's intake, energy levels etc. This past holiday season I found myself in a flurry of ugly sweater parties, white elephant gift giving and massive amounts of alcohol and sweets. The New Year, and my poor battered body tell me it's time. "So fresh 'n so clean" I sing, as I throw fresh fruit and veggies into my new stainless steel masterpiece.

Most of new years day was spent by the fire watching movies and then cooking a big pot of soup for a friend who has been very ill as of late. As I sat with this couple (in their late 60's), listening to stories of their youth spent on Haight St. in the 60's, making custom jewelry for people based on "their energy," and hanging with the likes of Janis Joplin, I couldn't help but be distracted by their home. The tell-tale signs of a life lived....old photos, family heirlooms, beautiful antiques, found objects and incredible crafts picked up through travel. Inspiration pouring from not only them but every corner of this magnificent little house in the woods. Yes, clothing can say heaps about a person but a home tells stories.

Whether it's a simple white tee and the perfect pair of loose blue jeans, a fluffy fur, or classic khaki hot shorts and prepster stockings, this classic 60's Beauty proved that less was certainly more.
